Talking History
Ambeth Ocampo: How reliable is a piece of literature as history?
Teodoro Agoncillo: It takes a very perceptive reader to do that. For example, if you know nothing about Jose Rizal and his times, you cannot use Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
Ambeth Ocampo: Kunsabagay.
Teodoro Agoncillo: Kaya kailangan malaman mo the time in which Rizal wrote so that you can determine which part of the novel is real, taken from real life and which is not taken from real life. Kaya mahirap iyan...
Ambeth Ocampo: ...what will be the standard of literary criticism?
Teodoro Agoncillo: Basta sa akin, you must have the cultural background which is most important. Also, the insight of which is very important because no amount of cultural background can help you when you have no insight. Merong mga taong talagang sharp ang insight nakikita agad... but sometimes akala nila iyong interpretation na nawala roon, inilalagay nila. I disagree with that.

Talking History
Ambeth Ocampo: Kunwari you have three different sources, iba-iba, how do you judge which one to believe?
Teodoro Agoncillo: Diyan mo makikilala ang galing ng student of history! Especially when they are conflicting. ...what you will determine first is the authenticity of the document. Assuming the document has been authenticated, the next is reliability. How reliable is the person writing this? Where was he at the time? What prejudices has he?
Ambeth Ocampo: Parang detective?
Teodoro Agoncillo: ...There is great similarity between the legal evidence and the historical evidence. The only difference lies in the fact that in legal evidence, it is the judge who determines whether the account of a witness is acceptable or not. ...The historian is the prosecuting attorney and the judge all rolled into one, and he is the narrator and interpreter. There is no evidence which is hearsay but which is credible. Sa legal evidence, basta hearsay hindi tatanggapin. Not the historian. Kahit hearsay, basta credible. The philosophy behind the law is that it is better to acquit a guilty person than to condemn an innocent person. Kaya when there is doubt, it is always in favor of the person who is guilty [accused]. Kahit na guilty ang hayop na iyan, nalalaman mo personally na he is guilty, but because the prosecutor was not able to prove the line of guilt, the judge will be compelled to acquit him. But not the historian. Kaya masaya iyong klase ko na I handled because aside from the books I have on evidence in history, I have my own experience. I add my experience.
